We are living longer than ever before so need our eyes to remain as healthy as possible for as long as possible. We all know the affects a bad diet can have on health matters such as our weight, blood pressure and hearts, however many of us are unaware of the impact a bad diet can have on other organs such as our eyes.
New research from Thea Pharmaceuticals has revealed that one in five Brits do not think eye health can be affected by a poor diet and double this (40%) have no idea whether it can or not. However, 52% of optometrists fear that an increase in the convenience of processed foods will play a key part in the deterioration of the nation’s eye health over the next 5-10 years.
As with any other organ in our bodies, our eyes are also affected as we age and the prevalence of degenerative eye conditions such as Cataract, Glaucoma, Dry Eye Syndrome and Age-related macular degeneration (The leading cause of blindness in the developed world) are on the rise. It has therefore never been more important to ensure we are taking preventative steps to ensure our eyes are as healthy as possible right into old age.
When looking at what you need to eat to get all the right eye-friendly nutrients, there are many misconceptions surrounding which foods are best.
And while a balanced diet can help with both overall health and, specifically, eye health, with today’s modern and hectic lifestyles it can be difficult to get enough of the eye friendly nutrients needed to help support and maintain eye health.
Dietitian Helen Bond explains why a balanced diet really is so important, what the key nutrients needed for maintaining eye health are and how to get these nutrients into our daily diet.
