Nourishing ageing skin

France Baudet’s golden rules for older women to suit skin type and age.

My clients often ask me what is the secret of getting truly nourished skin when there is so much information out there suggesting special diets, complex daily routines and expensive wonder products?   Truly I think the secret to truly nourished skin is a little more simple.

To understand how to nourish your skin, you need to first understand what type of skin you have. Different skin types require different levels of moisture and creams are only effective if they suit your skin’s needs. The five recognised skin types include normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive skin. As your skin ages your daily routine may change and certainly your products should.

Whatever age and skin type you have, the essentials of nourished skin start here:

  1. Protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays by wearing sun cream.
  2. Drink two litres of water each day to keep your body refreshed and hydrated.
  3. Eat a healthy, balanced diet – you are what you eat! Make sure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need from your food, and get plenty of oily fish for the all important omega-3 fatty acids which keep the skin supple.
  4. Get plenty of sleep to give your skin cells a chance to repair and rebuild.

Once you have those essentials sorted, your skin will really benefit from a simple daily routine to nourish and protect it. As your skin ages it loses its ability to retain water as it once did. Its renewal powers also slow down and it starts producing less elastin and collagen. During your 40s and 50s your skin can benefit from more intensive moisturisers. It is important to pick one that is right for your skin type to really nourish and benefit. Treat your skin to regular face masks and treatments as well. For mature skin try a facial specifically designed to revitalise skin and even out your complexion such as a CACI facial.

Whatever products you use for your skin care routine, some parts can get overlooked. It is important to pay attention to your neck and hands to make sure all areas of your skin get the same treatment and are not left out.  Many of us just concentrate on having radiant skin on our face but don’t moisturise our body leaving you with scaly, dry skin elsewhere.

If we think our eyes are our gateway to the soul then they need particular looking after!  Use a daily eye cream and an eye mask once a week or fortnightly.

With my four golden essentials and a daily routine to suit your skin type and age, I think your skin will become truly nourished. Don’t expect things to change immediately, but over time you will reap the rewards and achieve that radiance and glow you always dreamed of.
