Hello and welcome to my latest column on 50connect. If you’d like to know about a certain something that can give you glowing skin that looks ‘lit from within’, whilst also relieving any aches and pains you may have, and isn’t it just the time of year when aches and pains can seem worse? Take a few moments out to relax with a cuppa and have a read.
Today I’m talking about the miracle that is MSM – (methylsulfonylmethane). If you’re not already familiar with this beautifying mineral, then you’ll definitely want to know more……
I am a huge fan of MSM – also known as ‘The Beauty Mineral’ and ‘The Healing Mineral’. I have used it on and off for several years and love the effects. Admittedly it had fallen out of my routine a short time ago, just for a little while. I was annoyed at myself for letting it slip, especially as I really noticed a difference without it! The positive being that it has made me notice even more so how amazing it is! I will explain further on why it fell out of routine and why it won’t happen again!
What exactly is MSM?
MSM is a mineral. A natural form of organic sulphur that is present in the tissue of all living things. Varying amounts are also present in food sources. MSM falls to the earth in rain water and is then absorbed from the soil by plant life.
It is a mineral that is absolutely crucial for cell regeneration! But unfortunately most people fall very short of MSM through diet alone.
What does MSM do?
MSM provides the body with the nutritional sulphur needed to support many bodily functions. It is a vital building block needed for the production of collagen and elastin. It is the collagen and elastin that keeps our skin firm, plump and strong.
It is an anti-inflammatory, which is essential for pain relief as well as the relief of certain skin conditions. MSM also detoxifies the body and helps to maintain the body’s pH balance.
What food sources is it in?
MSM is present in Brussel sprouts, kale, cabbage, garlic, onions & asparagus. It is also in eggs, milk and fish. However, much of the MSM is lost through cooking and food processing, so supplementation is very beneficial.
The benefits I have personally experienced from taking MSM
Firmer, tighter, more elastic skin. I have especially noticed this in my under-eye area recently. Plumper skin – due to the increase in the production of collagen and elastin. Thicker, shinier hair. My hair hasn’t shed anywhere near as much. Longer eyelashes and brows filling in where they were sparse. Nails are even stronger and harder. One of the biggest things……I think it played a large part in clearing up the skin condition – Keratosis Pilaris, from my upper arms. This is the condition that makes skin look like chicken skin. Raised and red spots, often with hardened white heads. My arms are smooth and clear now. My creaky knees are also much less creaky!
These are just my own personal benefits. I have read truly miraculous reviews of what it has done for other people in terms of pain relief.
David Wolfe – Nutritionist, raw food advocate and author of the book – Eating for Beauty, states that sulphur is the most beautifying of all nutrients and the best cosmetic in the world!
Where can I buy it from?
I love the brand Doctor’s Best. Although I have also used other brands. The important thing for me is that it is OptiMSM and is clean with no unnecessary fillers added.
OptiMSM is the world’s purest MSM and is manufactured in the United States. It is the only MSM supported by double-blind clinical research. Every batch of OptiMSM is distilled four times to guarantee its quality and purity.
Written on my tub of Doctor’s Best MSM capsules:
Best MSM supplies highly purified MSM, a compound notable for its methyl groups (required for numerous metabolic functions) and the conditionally essential mineral sulphur, which is a crucial component of powerful antioxidants such as N-acetylcysteine and glutathione. Although MSM occurs naturally in some foods and in the human body at low concentrations, a significant amount of MSM is lost during the heating and processing of foods.
- Helps promote joint comfort and mobility
- Helps support healthy immune response
- Helps enhance antioxidant defences
Oh, I said I’d let you know why it fell out of routine for a short while. MSM in the powder form doesn’t taste particularly nice, it’s quite bitter, although it is a taste that you get used to. I used to take it mixed with a vitamin C effervescent, which was not so bad as it disguised the taste somewhat. However, due to the ingredients in the vitamin C tablets I stopped taking them and found I subsequently stopped taking MSM. I have now switched to the capsules. I take 3- 4 capsules a day taken at different intervals. It’s best to start out slowly though as it does detoxify the body. I actually went through a couple of days of detox effects whilst increasing my dose. A few aches and pains, feeling more tired etc. I also choose to take my MSM with a vitamin C supplement to aid absorption. You will find you need to drink more water whilst using MSM, not exactly a bad thing!
If you decide to take MSM for its amazing benefits, it’s worth knowing that MSM in skincare products applied topically is also very effective! It is in two of my favourite NCN Pro Skincare products and can be found over on my website treattheskinyourein.com
These two products are best sellers and I personally love the double whammy effect of treating from within as well as treating topically on the skin.
Here are the links to the MSM that I choose to buy, as well as the skincare products containing MSM that I use.
