Charlotte Rowe, garden design consult, explains why properly planning ahead in a garden renovation is essential. Here she shares her top tips on making the most of your garden all year round with advice on the current trends and her favourite designs and materials to use.
Plan ahead
When it comes to your garden renovation, planning ahead is essential. An accurate site survey of your garden should be the first step in the transformation process. In order to make the most of your outside space careful measurements should be taken of the entire area.
The next step in the planning process is to decide on the functionality of the garden taking into account who the garden is for, how it will be used, how much time is needed to maintain the space and what type of furniture and lighting will be suitable for your lifestyle.
As well as the overall aesthetics of the garden, specific materials, plants and colour schemes need to be considered – making a wish list is a very good idea. A garden designer can be very beneficial in providing suitable suggestions so it may also be wise to get a consultation before the work begins.
Get back to nature
With outdoor dining becoming increasingly popular, BBQ designs and outdoor ovens are great ways to get back to nature. With a range of fire pits, pizza ovens, meat smokers and BBQs, cooking outside is easier and is a fun way to get more use from your garden – as well as enjoying all the delicious food!
Weather proof your space
Creating a wonderful, relaxing garden is a lovely idea but with the unreliable British weather, practicality is crucial when designing a functioning garden. Outside heating in the form of fire pits, fire bowls and fireplaces are a stylish way to stay warm whilst still enjoying entertaining outside. Centering a chiminea into your space will not only provide warmth on a cool evening but also makes for a lovely garden ornament.
Bring the outside in
Opening up your home to your garden is a lovely way to add a breath of fresh air indoors. Using Bi-fold and sliding glass doors is a great way to combine the two areas and will make the space you have feel bigger.
Follow the trends
From home and gardening shows to asking your local garden designer for advice, there are plenty of recourses to use to get inspiration for your own garden renovation. Just as with home renovations, the use of materials such a polished concrete to transform your outside space is becoming increasingly popular as it’s a way of making your space more personal but sleek.
