Idyllically located in picture-perfect Shipston-on-Stour, the town so often described as the ‘gateway to the Cotswolds’, a weekend at The George Townhouse is the ideal city escape. Just a short drive from Stratford-Upon-Avon, a medieval market town that prides itself on its beauty and Shakespearian history, there is plenty to do and see, including a tour of the local distillery – but most importantly the perfect place to get a breath of fresh air and relax!
With 15 en-suite rooms spread across three floors the attention to detail offers a sense of luxury whilst providing a very comfortable night’s sleep. Although having received a make-over, the 18th Century Townhouse has kept a tight hold over its quirky period charms and our suite at the top of the house has kept its wooden beams, although padding has been tactfully added to avoid injury. Providing everything you’d expect from a modern hotel room, the brownies and spa products were lovely touches with a surprise gift making the whole experience feel very personal.
Onto the food; the George prides itself on sourcing local produce where possible and this definitely shows in the pride and quality of each dish they serve. With the Shakespeare distillery just a short drive away, the gin and cocktail menu were of course the first thing to peruse. Sitting down to dinner at 8pm, the pantry was filled, adding a lovely ambiance to our meal but I’d defiantly recommend booking a table to avoid disappointment. The meals themselves were executed to a very high standard and I’d highly recommend the cheese soufflé, the hot chocolate mousse with salted caramel ice-cream and the bulgur wheat, avocado and poached eggs for breakfast!
The service from staff was excellent with advice on where to go and local events readily available. From being shown to our room to checking out, we were always welcomed, making the George a very comfortable and relaxed destination for a countryside retreat.
