Easter egg trails: Fun days out for all the family

We’ve compiled the pick of more than 190 Easter egg trails at National Trust properties around the UK. Get your wellies on and get out there.

Bring the whole family together this Easter and treat your loved ones to a spring adventure at one of more than 190 Easter trails at National Trust properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

From getting active in the great outdoors to spotting the signs of spring and experiencing nature bursting into life at the places the National Trust cares for there are over 190 Easter trails to choose from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Every single National Trust Easter trail is different and celebrates nature, history and beauty. Follow winding garden paths, crash along muddy woodland trails or time travel with adventures to castles, towers, and mansions.  

And of course, each National Trust Easter trail ends with a chocolate egg, or vegan and free from chocolate egg, made here in the UK using cocoa that’s responsibly sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

North

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, North Yorkshire

  • Easter adventure trail April, 1–17 April

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a unique place with one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England and an elegant 18th century water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies.

Pick up an Easter adventure trail and follow the map around the estate to complete activities during your visit. From spring flowers blooming and boxing brown hares to deer appearing in the park, there’s plenty to spot. And don’t miss a trip to the play area.

There are things to wobble along, jump over and climb on… you’ll find a wooden abbey, a woodland house, scramble nets and posts, swings, fireman’s poles, a slide, a roundabout, a gigantic rope bridge and a huge zip wire for the most daring adventurers of all.

Dunham Massey, Greater Manchester

Dunham Massey is a green oasis nestled between the vibrancy of Manchester and tranquillity of rural Cheshire. With its beautiful ancient trees, magnificent reflective moat and Orangery on the lawn, it’s a total escape from city life. This spring, Dunham Massey’s Easter adventures trail celebrates historical connections with pets and animals, while encouraging families and friends to get out and get active!

See the Stables building where the much-loved Sir Oliver the horse lived and get involved in your own hobby horse race. Find out about a very special pet parrot and feel the breeze as you run through the park like a bird in flight. Spot fallow deer with just one antler (as they ‘cast’ off their old ones) and spot colourful butterflies when you follow the winding paths in the Winter Garden. For further adventure head to the North Park where the ‘Log Pile’ natural play area can be found.

Nostell, West Yorkshire

This historic Georgian house is home to some of Robert Adam’s finest interiors and has one of the best collections of Chippendale furniture (commissioned for the house) in the country. 300 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland offer picture-perfect views of the historic mansion, rolling hills and majestic woodland.

Head off on the Easter trail to celebrate the signs of spring, before shaking out the picnic blanket and relaxing among the daisies and buttercups that pepper the lawn. Jump, swing, and slide in the ever-popular adventure play area nestled in the enchanting woodland bordering the gardens. Or explore shady paths for gentle walks and woodland trails for leisurely bike rides.

Lyme, Cheshire

There’s over 600 years of history here, from the ancient deer herd to the extraordinary mansion. Inside, step back into Austen’s England and explore a house revived in the Regency Period that may have inspired the real Pemberley.

Families can explore the stories and characters hidden in the house at Lyme with a brand-new house trail. Houses like Lyme painted their walls and rooms with stories, so they could read an exciting adventure story, a drama or a romance as they walked from room to room.

Use the characters you find along the way to build your own story and imagine what story you would put. With the second highest garden in the National Trust, spring starts later and lasts longer at Lyme, and has provided the inspiration for this year’s Easter trail. Uncover the sights and sounds of spring in the garden, as Lyme bursts back into life. Explore the garden and discover the cosy houses hundreds of species of animals and insects have built and to return to each year.

Cragside, Northumberland  

  • Easter adventure trail 1–16 April

Experience Britain’s original smart home. Illuminated by hydro-electricity and powered by hydraulics, this pioneering home was filled with Victorian gadgets for efficient modern living. Man-made lakes, tumbling waterfalls and swathes of rhododendron combine to form the surrounding fantasy mountain landscape imagined and engineered by inventor and arms manufacturer Lord Armstrong and his wife Lady Margaret.

The gardens and grounds of this Arts and Crafts house offer 1,000 acres and 14 waymarked routes to explore.

This year’s Easter trail will go around Tumbleton Lake, with activities including an egg and spoon obstacle course, a chance to play musical instruments made from foraged materials and an opportunity to add to the Easter wish tree. Plus, there’ll be pop up activities elsewhere on the estate, such as egg-shaped bunting making in the stables and Easter card making in the tea room.

Stay: Take your pick from Cragside Park Cottage, a Victorian Arts and Crafts style house sleeping six or Cragside Garden Cottage (also sleeping six), here views extend over the Italian Terrace to the Coquet Valley and Simonside Hills beyond.

Wallington, Northumberland

Located in the beautiful Northumberland countryside, Wallington has lots to offer for a fun packed day out. Whether it’s a peaceful walk in the woodlands, a meander through the tranquil walled garden, embracing your sense of adventure in one of the four play areas or discovering the collections in the impressive mansion, there’s something for everyone.

The River Walk is a great place to spot the resident wildlife, including rare red squirrels, or bring your bike to venture further out into the estate on the family-friendly Dragon cycle trail.

Celebrate the arrival of spring on the Easter trail as you explore the West Wood, with lots of different activities to take part in along the way. Get creative with wild art, test your skills with target practice, and make some music with some natural instruments before collecting your egg.

Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland

  • Easter adventure trail, 1–16 April

Seaton Delaval Hall is considered by many to be Sir John Vanbrugh’s greatest architectural masterpiece. Its once grand spaces were partially destroyed by fire 200 years ago, leaving just a shell of the building which, today, offers the chance to discover it from new angles.

Known as the home of the theatrical and flamboyant 18th century ‘gay Delavals’, there is playfulness for all at its heart. Discover surprises around every corner inspired by the Delavals’ love of drama and trickery, from playful mirrored installations and hidden sound tubes to the vibrant and colourful floral displays in the formal gardens.

You’re invited to make your own mischief as you follow the Easter trail around the grounds. Head to The Oval, where the Delavals once made merry, to take part in giant egg and spoon races and wheelbarrow races and hit the target with the egg in the nest game. Enjoy outdoor games including noughts and crosses in the East Wing Courtyard and climb into the green Tent of Wonder to plant your own sunflower seed to take home to grow.

When you’ve finished your trail head over to theatre-inspired Delaval Playdium play area. Get creative with chalks on the ‘flats’ and design your own scenery; make a noise with the hidden rain, wind and thunder-clap machines and take to the stage on the central climbing frame. It’s play just as the Delavals would have done!

Wordsworth House & Garden, Cumbria

  • Easter adventure trail, Saturday to Wednesday 1–16 April

William Wordsworth’s childhood home is a step back in time where the whole family can experience what it might have been like to live in the 1770s. Each room has something different to discover, from dressing up clothes in the children’s room and a full working Georgian kitchen to a brand new exhibition. When it’s time for some fresh air, the Easter trail in the walled garden showcases William’s beloved daffodils and other signs of spring while offering the chance to get creative at the arts and crafts table. Why not also try your hand at some Georgian games under the many heritage apple trees with blossom buds slowly awakening all around.

Allan Bank, Cumbria

  • Easter adventure trail 8-16 April

This historic villa, once home to William Wordsworth, combines a small informal art gallery with a giant indoor mural space – it’s a place for artists to explore nature. Surrounded by 19th century wooded pleasure grounds with stunning views over Grasmere, Allan Bank offers a rare chance to encounter red squirrels, have a picnic or relax by the fire. 

An outdoor Easter Trail offers lots of nature-based fun while exploring the woodland grounds, before heading into the house to check out the giant murals and get crafty in the art room. Families can take part in a daily Easter bonnet parade by bringing a homemade bonnet or making one there with a bonnet making kit.

Picnics are welcome, both outdoors and inside the house where visitors can help themselves to free hot drinks.

Northern Ireland

Castle Ward, County Down

  • Easter adventure trail 1–17 April

Strolling through this 820-acre walled demesne takes you along trails that wind their way through atmospheric woodland (famous for its spring bluebell displays), parkland and gardens, offering impressive views over Strangford Lough and the surrounding countryside.

The quirky 18th century house, designed as a combination of two completely different styles: gothic on one facade and Palladian on the other and farmyard that doubled up as Game of Thrones’ Winterfell add to the charm of the grounds. The Easter trail celebrates the arrival of spring with nods to the new birds visiting the shore and the arrival of cheery spring blooms.

Mount Stewart, County Down

  • Easter adventure trail 1–15 April

Mount Stewart is one of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated gardens, a world class garden much loved for its originality and unrivalled collections of plants. A place of the imagination, the Formal Garden around the house is themed using plants from all round the world. While the Pleasure Ground surrounding the Lake is a semi natural woodland garden containing many rare plants which thrive in the mild climate of the Ards Peninsula.

The Easter trail will celebrate the arrival of spring, with opportunities to sniff out Wild Garlic, and the chance to spot a variety of southern migratory birds, including swallows, singing blackcap and chiffchaff.

Rowallane Garden, County Down

Carved from the County Down landscape, Rowallane has grown from 19th century beginnings and remains a place where you can leave the outside world behind and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. A mix of formal and informal spaces with many unusual vistas and unique plants from across the world.

Rowallane Garden is home to a range of spring favourites including daffodils, magnolia and camelia, as well as some fascinating creatures. Take to the Easter trail and look out for frogs and birds, a range of pollinators and insects that call this special place home.

The Argory, County Armagh

  • Easter adventure trail 316 April

The Argory was built in the 1820s and its hillside location enjoys peaceful views of the River Blackwater, running wild through its woods deep in the green County Armagh countryside. Even toddlers can get on board in the play area with its huge jungle climbing frame, low ropes challenge, balancing logs, rope swings and a cool zip wire leading from the play area all the way out into the woodland. On the Easter trail take in the colour spring blooms, from blue trailing wisteria to speckled foxgloves and listen out for the low-hum of buzzing  pollinators.

Florence Court, Co Fermanagh

  • Easter adventure, 7 14 April

This 18th century house and gardens are surrounded by thick woodland, with Benaughlin mountain rising in the background. Miles of walking paths and cycling trails wind through the forest to reveal industrial heritage features such as a water-powered sawmill and a blacksmith’s forge.

Take to the Easter adventure trail and listen out for the chorus of birds, from resident robins, blackbirds, thrushes and wrens to visiting chiffchaffs and blackcaps. Don’t miss a visit to the two newly restored glasshouses, one celebrates 1930s gardening and the other has been designed for use by the local community.

Castle Coole, Co Fermanagh

Castle Coole is one of Ireland’s finest Neo-classical houses. Make a day of it and cycle the four miles of trails. Look out of red squirrels as you explore the grounds of Castle Coole. Balance bikes are available to hire for free from visitor reception for younger children to explore. Take the Easter adventure trail to explore the woodland around Castle Coole.

Midlands

Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire

With 3,800 acres of parkland providing the perfect backdrop for exploring, relaxing and making memories. This Easter follow the adventure trail and spot signs of spring and complete nature-inspired activities. Make a day of it by hiring bikes from the Cycle Hub, or bringing your own, is the perfect way to explore the woods and lakeside views. Have fun den building in the natural play area, enjoy climbing, hiding and exploring in the hidden Woodland Play Park.

Look out for wildlife as you explore the Pleasure Grounds or spend a peaceful moment in the Bird Hide. The Discovery Centre is a great place to learn more about Clumber Park’s history and the amazing array of wildlife that lives here. It offers indoor space for making new discoveries and to get involved in a variety of craft activities.

Charlecote Park, Warwickshire

  • Easter adventure, 1 16 April

Overlooking the river Avon on the edge of Shakespeare’s Stratford, Charlecote Park has been part of this corner of rural Warwickshire for centuries.  The Victorian home set in a landscaped deer park, has over 180 acres to explore. On the Easter trail celebrate the signs of spring with nature-themed activities. Wander, picnic and play in the spring sunshine in the parkland, inspired by ‘Capability’ Brown.

Enjoy tranquil views across the rivers Avon and Dene and spot a wide variety of wildlife around every corner, including the historic herds of Jacob sheep and fallow deer which roam freely in the parkland all year round.

Coughton Court, Warwickshire

  • Easter adventure trail 4 – 10 April

Easter is just around the corner, and we’ve got some exciting plans to celebrate spring and keep the whole family entertained throughout the Easter holiday at Coughton Court. Join us for an Easter adventure out in nature with a trail through the parkland this spring, give our rabbit racecourse a try, see who can build the tallest tower with our building blocks and finish up by stopping by our craft space to see what you can make to take home. Complete the trail, collect your chocolate egg and enjoy something delicious from the BBQ.

Hanbury Hall & Gardens, Worcestershire

  • Easter adventure trail 5 – 11 April

Bring all the family along to Hanbury Hall this Easter for a springtime adventure. Take part in the family-friendly trail across the parkland and complete fun activities from hula hooping and wheelbarrow racing, to decorating an Easter egg to hang on the Easter tree. Complete all ten stations and collect your chocolate egg at the finish line.

Take a stroll through the peaceful Formal Gardens and look out for the spectacular spring display in the Parterre of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips. Watch the leaping lambs in the front park, and spot blossom flowering out in the orchards. The Hall, gardens, parkland and Stables Café are open daily for pre-booked visits.

Hardwick, Derbyshire

  • Easter adventure trail 1–17 April

Winding its way through parkland scattered with ancient oaks, Hardwick’s drive offers glimpses of the famous house, with its golden stonework, turrets, and sparkling glass. The estate surrounding the Hall, covers around 2,000 acres of stunning parkland, woodland, and farmland. This Easter, the adventure trail will encourage families to be a hedge detective and find out what creatures are living in the undergrowth. Count bumblebees as you explore the parkland, or maybe you’ll spot the colours of spring in the woodland.

Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire

With 2,500 acres of gently rolling countryside west of Cambridge the gardens and parkland surrounding Wimpole Hall offer plenty of room for family adventure. The formal gardens include a walled garden with flower borders and orchard that’s home to 300 blossoming fruit trees. There are also miles of footpaths around the Capability Brown-designed parks, as well as woodland, picturesque folly and chain of lakes, and a rare breed farm where you can come and meet some familiar faces and new arrivals.

Embark on an Easter adventure in nature and explore the gardens as you go on the hunt for Easter clues, with trails running daily you’ll spot new bountiful blossom and sunny yellow daffodils in the Pleasure Grounds as you follow the trail.

Enjoy nature-themed activities, including hop like a bunny, build a home for nature and wibble wobble like a lamb, completing the trail to pick up your chocolate egg at the end.

Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill, Cambridgeshire

Originally a medieval priory, Anglesey Abbey was converted to a country house in the 1600s and donated to the National Trust by Lord Fairhaven. On Anglesey Abbey’s Easter trail discover swathes of daffodils (there are 40 varieties found here), spot paintbox bright tulips and hyacinths as well as other signs of spring, all linked to Anglesey’s ‘Magic of Books’ theme for 2023. And if you’re after even more adventure the Woodland Play Area is the perfect place for families with its treehouse, swings, bird hide and den building area.

Ickworth Estate, Suffolk

Ickworth Estate is home to an Italianate Palace in the heart of an ancient deer park. Formal gardens, pleasure grounds, rolling Suffolk landscape and woodlands invite gentle strolls or long walks, runs, bike rides and picnics. The Italianate Garden with its magnolias mirrors the architecture of the house, whilst also encasing a magical Victorian stumpery, home to a secret dragon. This spring enjoy 10 different creative activities helping you to get inspired by the ancient woodlands and home of great art.  From wheelbarrow races and giant jigsaw puzzles, to creating your own wild art, there’s plenty to entertain all ages.

Blickling Estate, Norfolk

Blickling’s breath-taking Jacobean mansion and ancient yew hedges sit at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park in the beautiful Bure meadows. Feed your imagination and go on a wildlife adventure this Easter. Explore the garden with its beautiful displays of daffodils and notice the bluebells coming to life across the estate. The multi-use trail is perfect for burning off extra energy and suitable for walking, running, pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Oxburgh Estate, Norfolk

It’s hard not to fall in love with Oxburgh, when you catch your first glimpse of the imposing brick manor house reflected in the tranquil moat. In the gardens and wilderness, drifts of snowdrops and aconites are returning to the soil and daffodils are arriving to herald the start of spring. The orchard and kitchen garden are filling with delicate pink and white blossom from a variety of heritage fruit trees, whilst wild versions brighten up the woods.

This Easter explore the gardens on a spring-time adventure with a trail full of games and activities. Help the gardeners record the weather in the Kitchen Garden, see how far you can throw a welly over the lawns and show off your artistic side using nature as your inspiration.

As well as the Easter trail, families will find plenty of adventure at the Home Covert natural play area. Created from a 17th century wood and 18th century pasture and fenland, Home Covert is a great place for a family walk, to build a den or spot wildlife.

Felbrigg, Hall Gardens and Estate, Norfolk

  • Easter adventure trail, 1–16 April

A home for more than 400 years, Felbrigg has one of the largest collections in the National Trust. Inside, discover the history of the families who lived here and how they transformed it into the place you see today. Outside, the decorative and productive walled garden is a gardener’s delight, while the estate includes 520 aces of woodland, with rolling parkland, a lake and buggy-friendly paths. Have a springtime adventure with Felbrigg’s Adventures in Nature trail. Make your way along the family friendly route through the West Garden before heading into the woods, finding nature-inspired activities along the way.

Houghton Mill, Cambridgeshire

Set in an idyllic village location on an island on the Great Ouse River, Houghton Mill has inspired artists and photographers for generations. Come and experience the sound and atmosphere of a traditional working mill, have a go at making flour and make your Easter trip into a springtime break with the family friendly campsite. Enjoy Easter trail activities inside the historic watermill and outside in nature surrounded by the scenic Waterclose Meadows.

Sutton Hoo, Suffolk

This hauntingly beautiful 255-acre estate, with far-reaching views over the River Deben, is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. Walk around the Royal Burial Ground and enjoy vistas from the 17-metre viewing tower to discover the history of the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his treasured possessions.

Orford Ness, Suffolk

Orford Ness is an internationally important coastal nature reserve, with a fascinating 20th-century military history. A short boat trip takes you to this wild and remote shingle spit, the largest in Europe. Once there, discover an internationally important nature reserve strewn with debris and unusual, often forbidding, buildings from a sometimes-disturbing past. Orford Ness National Nature Reserve is the finest example of a vegetated shingle spit in Europe. Steeped in history, the site was used from 1913 until the mid-1980s as a secret military test site and today, you can walk amongst some of the unusual and intriguing test sites and buildings and uncover some of the sites secret past.

Huge lawns and majestic plane trees frame this welcoming 18th century house. In spring, the little orchard is filled with scented white cherry blossom, and jewel-coloured tulips pop from the borders.

The Vyne, Hampshire

Set on the edge of a magnificent lake, The Vyne was once a great Tudor powerhouse comparable in size to Hampton Court and regularly visited by King Henry VIII. Today, the spacious gardens, wetlands and woods are just waiting to be explored; look out for pink and white blossom in the fruit orchard, and early bluebells in Morgaston Woods.

The Vyne’s Easter trail takes families on an adventure into every nook and cranny of the gardens. Tackle the quirky obstacle course maze and host a family egg and spoon race on the north lawn. There are wellies to hunt for in the orchard, and in the walled gardens kids can create their own weather sounds at the weather station. A country retreat, only four miles from Dorking and junction 9 of the M25, Polesden Lacey has glorious views across the rolling Surrey Hills and acres of countryside to explore. Chartwell, Kent

Winston and Clementine Churchill bought Chartwell in 1922; it would be their family home for the next forty years. At Chartwell, Churchill was a politician and statesman but also a husband, father, writer, painter and garden planner.

Chartwell’s hillside gardens reflect his love of landscape and nature. They include the lakes he created, the kitchen garden and the Marycot, a playhouse designed for his youngest daughter Mary.

Arlington Court, Devon   

  • Easter adventure trail 2–16 April   

An unexpected jewel on the edge of Exmoor, Arlington Court is an intriguing Regency house with an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles, all set within glorious gardens. From nature trails and family games on the lawn to over twenty miles of footpaths on the wider estate, there is plenty to discover at Arlington this spring. This Easter follow the trail around the pleasure grounds and enjoy fun nature-themed activities to do along the way. Additional Easter activities will also be available including Easter crafts.

Tyntesfield, North Somerset

An ornate Victorian Gothic Revival house just a stone’s throw from Bristol (and just off junction 19 of the M5) with extensive gardens and parkland, Tyntesfield is the perfect destination for a spring day out. Kingston Lacy, Dorset

Stourhead, Wiltshire

When Stourhead first opened in the 1740s, a magazine described it as ‘a living work of art’. The world-famous landscape garden has at its centrepiece a magnificent lake reflecting classical temples, mystical grottoes, rare trees, spectacular rhododendrons and offers a day of fresh air and discovery.

This Easter set out on a springtime adventure around the pretty borders of the Top Garden. There are 10 points along the trail and activities include pin the tail on the bunny, help buzzy bee find their way back to the hive and swoop like a swallow.

Montacute, Somerset

  • Easter adventure trail 1–16 April 

Montacute House is an Elizabethan masterpiece of architecture and design. Its warm Hamstone construction casts playful shadows across the elegant garden, making it the perfect backdrop for a family day out. The wibbly-wobbly hedges are great for a game of hide and seek, or why not seek out the swings in the parkland followed by a well-deserved picnic on the lawn?

This year our Easter egg trail will be set close to the house across the cedar lawn and farmers’ piece to provide easy access for families with very young children and visitors with additional access needs. Trails will be sold at reception and each trail stop will have an activity for all ages to enjoy from making plasticine models to counting sheep.  Upon completion of the trail, visitors will be able to collect their egg from the shop.

Corfe Castle, Dorset

  • Easter adventure trail 1-16 April

There are few castles more evocative than Corfe Castle, an imposing ruin perched high on the hill, which is thought to be the inspiration for Kirrin Castle in Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books. It’s a formidable defensive, and the common around the castle has been shaped by human activity over thousands of years, and just a short walk from the pretty village.

In 2022 the Corfe Castle Dragon lost a lot of her possessions, brave explorers searched the ruins and were successful in locating and returned them to her. This Easter, she has asked you to return to complete a new set of challenges found throughout the castle ruins. Have your face painted and dress up like a soldier, royal resident or a peasant as you set out on the dragon’s quest.

Saltram, Devon

Saltram overlooks the River Plym and is set in a rolling landscape park that provides precious green space on the outskirts of Plymouth. The Tudor house, perched high above the River Tamar, is decorated with tapestries, arms and armour, pewter, brass and old oak furniture. Outside, explore the formally planted terraces, or lose yourself in the Valley Garden, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote and leads down to the river.

In the 19th century local industries boomed and Cotehele Quay bustled with vessels loading and unloading cargo. On the Easter trail find and complete the 10 nature-inspired activities that are hiding along the way.

Lanhydrock, Cornwall

A magnificent late Victorian country house with garden and wooded estate, Lanhydrock, near Bodmin, is a quintessential country house and estate. Discover two sides of Victorian life: from the kitchen which offers a thrilling glimpse into life ‘below stairs’, to the luxurious family areas, elegant dining room and spacious bedrooms which reveal the comforts of ‘upstairs’ living.

With the Lanhydrock estate covering 900 acres, there are plenty of adventures to be had. Explore the parkland, ancient woodland and riverside walks at your leisure. Hop, race and hula-hoop your way through Lanhydrock’s historic formal garden and seek out the old Thatched Cottage, transformed into a House of Games especially for Easter.

An unexpected jewel on the edge of Exmoor, Arlington Court is an intriguing Regency house with an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles, all set within glorious gardens. From nature trails and family games on the lawn to over twenty miles of footpaths on the wider estate, there is plenty to discover at Arlington this spring. Brownsea Island, Dorset

  • Easter minibeasts and birds adventure trail 1–16 April 

Brownsea Island is full of thriving habitats including woodland, heathland and a lagoon create a unique haven for wildlife, such as the rare red squirrel and a wide variety of birds, including dunlin, kingfishers, common and sandwich terns and oystercatchers.

This Easter, embark on a woodland adventure and discover the birds and the insects they like to eat – from the red-breasted robin who waits for the ground to thaw to gobble up the worms to blue tits who wait to lay their eggs until there’s a glut of caterpillars to feed their hungry chicks. Take part in a bug and spoon race, see if you can build a giant bird’s nest or drum as fast as a woodpecker.

From exploring the woodland garden full of blooms on a nature trail or spotting wildlife from the river, there’s plenty of fun to be had at Greenway this spring.

Originally built in the 1750s, Trelissick is set on its own peninsula with panoramic views over the Fal estuary. Explore the meandering paths through the garden that lead to exotic plants, herbaceous borders bursting with colour and spectacular maritime views. With the Trelissick estate covering over 300 acres of countryside, there are plenty of adventures to be had.

Explore the parkland, skim stones on Trelissick beach and wander through the woodland walks. If you’re looking for a family adventure this spring then take part in the Trelissick Easter egg trail. As you follow the trail around the garden look out for animal footprints, step, hop or jump along the stepping logs, search for spring colours and choose your pledge for nature.

An ancient castle that became a lavish country home during the 19th century, Dunster Castle has plenty of stories to tell – from rare leather hangings to a working watermill.

Famous for its spectacular views over the Somerset countryside and Bristol Channel, the garden at Dunster Castle will take you on a journey around the world. Known for its diversity of plants and features, the garden encompasses four different microclimates for you to experience, with sub-tropical, Mediterranean and temperate plants beside the river, in the herbaceous borders and on the terraces.

This Easter, discover more about Dunster Castle’s life as a fortress while you spot arrows, learn sword drills and play games.

Pentire, Cornwall

Overlooking Polzeath, a popular North Cornwall holiday destination, Pentire headland has been inhabited by humans since 4000BC but remains mostly undeveloped and a coastal escape for visitors.

The remnants of Iron Age ramparts can be seen at the Rumps and the scars of lead and silver mining are etched over the headland. Our relationship with the land continues and today the National Trust is farming for the benefit of nature, supporting the abundance of wildflowers and a variety of wildlife and birds that have made Pentire their home.

A hidden wooded valley full of surprises. With an industrial past and a secret garden, it’s the perfect place for heritage hunting and natural play. Making the most of the outdoors is easy at Colby Woodland Garden, just think of it as one big adventure playground. Clamber across stepping-stones scattered in the streams and delve into a water world of pond dipping and dam building.

Sitting on a dramatic escarpment above the winding Clywedog river, Erddig is a much-loved home, garden and estate filled with the stories of a family and their servants.

Keep everyone entertained with a fun family day out at Easter: Take a walk around the estate and follow one of the many waymarked paths through woodlands, meadows, past rivers and ponds. Little explorers will like the Wolf’s Den natural play area complete with a rope swing, stepping logs and den-building area. Balance on beams and climb on the natural playground nestled in Big Wood.

Head to the traditional farmyard and meet the animals, including Welsh cobs, Welsh pigs, poultry and geese and find out more about the traditional flock of a rare breed local sheep, called Llanwenog. In the elegant Georgian villa, designed by architect John Nash in 1790, visit the servant’s courtyard and Pamela Ward collection.

Take a stroll around the Walled Garden that has been producing fruit and vegetables for over 200 years – some of which you can buy to take home. An Easter trail and nature-inspired activities for the whole family will be available this Easter: the perfect way to explore the beautiful gardens and grounds of Llanerchaeron.

Penrhyn Castle and Garden, Bangor, North Wales

With views of Snowdonia and the North Wales coast, the extensive grounds are perfect spot for a picnic on a family day out. Climb trees, make dens and run wild in the natural woodland play area created by the Penrhyn ranger team. A medieval castle with views across the Severn Valley rises dramatically above the world-famous garden at Powis. Inside find world-class paintings, furniture and tapestries and outside 17th century Italianate terraces, 30ft clipped yew hedges, vibrant borders and trees full of blossom.

This year, internationally renowned fine artist and textile designer, Kaffe Fassett, is bringing his colourful exhibition to Mid Wales, adorning the Castle’s interiors with wondrous textiles from 18 February to 3 September. In the garden at Easter a bird themed trail includes feather finding and wingspan measuring, designed to be both exciting and educational for all the family.

Tredegar House, Newport, South Wales
